TALLAHASSEE, Fla. | Florida A&M and Alabama State’s volleyball rivalry has been one for the books this season. They each manage one loss in their Southwestern Athletic Conference schedules, those setbacks occurring against each other, and the latest meeting fell 3-1 to ASU Sunday (Nov. 6).
The decision capped the Rattler’s SWAC winning streak at 24. However, match highlights saw Dominique Washington enter the school’s all-time career list in kills. The graduate recorded a season-high 27 to move to 10th all-time in the category, where she
sits alongside Rattler greats like Kim Funchess and Adriana Kostinova.
Alabama State 3, Florida A&M 1 (25-23, 17-25, 30-28, 25-23)
The teams combined for 58 points in the third, the most FAMU has seen in a single set this season, and the home side had its chances to win it. The Rattlers eyed set point at 25-24 and 27-26, but each attempt was thwarted by an A’Nylah Cobb kill. Florida A&M later opened the fourth with a 6-2 advantage that steamrolled into a pair of late ties. Three straight FAMU points knotted the score at 19-19, but it could not regain its lead.
Washington was one of two Rattlers to record a double-double; she posted 14 digs, and Brooke Lynn Watts finished the night with 14 kills and 15 digs.
Florida A&M has another chance to defend its home court Monday in a 6 p.m. matchup against Alabama A&M.
